After the party broke up, Gwen, Jess, Marie, and I headed to a nearby Italian eatery to discuss my whole ugly work situation. We were still in full costume, which is perhaps why the hostess chose to seat us in a far, dark corner of the restaurant. As we started walking toward our far, dark corner, I heard a voice call my name.

“Angie! Over here.” It was Liza, sitting in a booth by the door. She stood and gave me a hug.

I introduced her to my three friends; Liza apologized for her uninspired attire. “When did you get in town? I thought you weren’t due until the end of the week.”

“Tim and I finished with Cincinnati early and caught an earlier flight. Didn’t he tell you? Maybe he didn’t have time to call.”

“No, he didn’t say anything about…”

“Angie!” and the aforementioned Tim stood beside me. He gave me a quick, awkward hug. “Wow, you all look, um, interesting. Angie, I meant to call but…”

“No problem,” I said, feeling accountably uncomfortable.

“Why don’t you all join us?” Liza offered graciously. “We haven’t ordered yet.”

“Oh, gosh, well, no, thanks,” I stammered. “We’ve got some business to discuss, as, um, I’m sure you do.”

My three friends and I settled in at our table in the dark corner at the far end of the room. Gwen, Jess, and Marie situated their chairs strategically to get a good view of Tim and Liza, and I carefully placed my chair so that I could not. We were silent for several minutes as my three buddies cross-examined me with their arched eyebrows.

“What?” I finally said defensively. “I’ve told you about Liza. She’s his business associate. They have every right to have dinner together.”

“Sure, Angie,” Jess said skeptically.

“But you know what’s funny?” Marie chuckled.

“What?” I said, not finding much humor at all in the past couple of hours.

“Who do you think she looks like? Her mannerisms, her voice, everything.” Marie’s eyes twinkled, and she winked at Gwen and Jess who smiled in return.

“Who?” I asked numbly.

My three friends burst out laughing. “You!” they gasped. “She could be your twin sister.” Marie giggled.

“Or your clone!” Gwen chortled.

Or my replacement, I thought glumly. “Forget about them. We’re here to figure out what I can do about Russ.”

“Okay,” Jess said, grabbing her pen and a stack of paper napkins. “First we need a project charter…”

“Well, the purpose of this project is to get Angie out of that hellhole,” Marie asserted.

“With her dignity intact,” Gwen added.

“Honestly, Angie,” Jess said seriously, “no affirmation in the world will fix that horrendous situation or change that awful, nasty man.”

“And perhaps,” Marie, queen of kindness mused, “we need to inflict a bit of pain on that despicable little creature.”

“A good deal of pain,” Jessica agreed.

“An extreme, acute, severe, excruciating amount of pain,” Gwen concluded.

“Okay,” I said with a sigh. “So how?”
